Many vehicle searches start from a complaint that belongs to a different question. The complaint may be about money, space, or upkeep, and each of those leads to different records. This guide shows how to name the need in a plain sentence before any model page is opened.

Sort the complaint into its real question

Ask whether the problem is about how the vehicle is used, how it is owned, or how it is paid for. A use question concerns the route, the load, the passengers, or the towing you already do. An ownership question concerns who services the vehicle, how records are kept, and where repairs are done. A payment question concerns the terms of the purchase or lease you will sign, which this site does not price. Sort the complaint into a single category before you search.

Write the need as a sentence

Write a sentence in this form: I need a vehicle that does this job, for this many people, on this route, and I will keep its records this way. Keep brand and model names out of it. If the sentence only makes sense with a brand in it, you may be searching for a feature rather than a need. Write that feature down as a question to test later.

Test the sentence against the record

Take each part of the sentence and find where the answer would be written. The route and load are answered by the model-year record and the owner's manual for that year. The record-keeping part is answered by the brand's factory terms and by the paperwork the seller will hand you. A general worry, such as doubt about long-term dependability, is not a need you can test. Turn it into a narrow question you can check against a published record, and say which record you expect to answer it.

When the answer is still missing

If the record does not answer the sentence, write the question in the same form and put it to whoever keeps the record you are reading, whether that is the seller, the brand, or the registry. Do not accept a summary in its place. Keep the question and the answer together in the vehicle file so that someone who was not in the room can check the decision later.
